"Blood tests"

About: Jubilee Hospital / Community Hub

(as the patient),

I had my blood taken for tests, which I get done every 2 months. Nurse was excellent. Taken on time , no problems.

Jubilee Hospital is in the same building as the Health Centre. Now new procedures the last 2 months I have to telephone Aberdeen for a blood test. The nurse now has to come from Aberdeen I think for 2 days here.

Before, I phoned the Health Centre and a nurse there took it. Now if local patient need a blood test done under their local Dr, the patient calls the Health Centre and a local nurse does it. But as I am under a consultant in ARI (Hematology), I have to phone Aberdeen to book it and a nurse has to come out to take it.

Where in heaven's name is this progress, cost, environmental pollution from wasted car journey? It beggers belief. No reason given as you're a haematology patient. It is all one NHS or is it not?

If I wanted result I called 24 hours later. But results do not go to Health Centre. If I want results I have to call haematology, speak to a Macmillan agent, not a nurse, they find out and call me back  later. Progress, I think not.

I have no problem with actually blood test or the blood letting at the Health Centre or Jubilee Hospital. All seem to be on same corridor.  But supposed to use different doors?

Dear Spot51

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. It is great to hear that the nurse at the Huntly secondary care hub was excellent and that you were seen on time. I will ensure that this is passed onto her. The staff all love to hear positive feedback, this will make her day.

With regard to the change in process for you booking your bloods and having to attend a different part of the Jubilee Hospital site to have these taken. I can understand why this seems like a backward step, but the hubs have been set up to see patients who are under the management of secondary care clinicians. This is to relieve the pressure on our GP practices. We have hubs in Aberdeen, Elgin and 12 other sites across the NHS Grampian area, this means that most patients have access to this service close to their homes.

The results go directly to the speciality who are looking after your care. This means your results can be checked and followed up if required by your consultant. This also saves the GP practice having to contact your consultant if there are any problems with the results.

I hope this goes some way to explain why the secondary care hubs have been set up and the benefits that they bring to both Primary and Secondary care within Grampian.

Best wishes

Jennifer Fraser
