"A rocky start but I am so pleased with how things are going"

About: Specialist Child Health & Disability / Speech and Language Therapy Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was diagnosed with a severe speech sound disorder. Unfortunately we were left on an extremely long waiting list since she was referred to SLT at the age of 18 months. By the time we were actually seen in person or assessed she was 4 years old.

She is now part of an amazing project which gives her intense speech therapy twice a week and is focused on her exact diagnosis.

A rocky start but I am so pleased with how things are going at the minute with SLT in Lurgan Hospital. The team are amazing and I'm so grateful for their hard work to introduce this new project for speech sound disorders so that more people like my child who are slipping through the cracks can be recognised and helped.

Thank you for sharing your experience of Speech and Language Therapy to date. It is so regrettable that you endured a long wait to access support. As a team we are working hard to try to reduce these wait times and to offer advice and signposting to parents at an earlier stage in their journey. I am delighted to hear that you feel things have improved so much for you both now, this is such a positive outcome! We are delighted to have been able to introduce the speech sound disorder project, which can deliver tailor made therapy for children with severe SSD. Wishing you and your daughter every success for the future!
