"Disappointing attention from Ambulance service"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 2 (Emergency Surgical)

(as the patient),

At the beginning of August I had a cystoscopy at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy due to urine retention. Later that evening went into acute retention. Rang 999 late evening and I was told this is not an emergency. Rang then rang 111.  By early following morning, call answered and ambulance came. I went out with a night bag expecting admission. Got no further than bottom step of ambulance. This was to take blood pressure and Oxygen sats.At this point I said something that may have been misunderstood, namely ability to pass water had improved for a time. The crew seemed to infer I was recovering and proceeded to tell me no one would be in hospital to help and it was too soon after a procedure. Sheepishly I went back indoors even though I had been bursting for the toilet for hours. The ambulance left.

I spent a sleepless night up and down trying to pass urine totally without success for hours until daylight. At some point I rang the hospital (I think). They asked if I could drive. I said yes and did so in gruelling discomfort. I was taken to Admissions unit 2 and after about an hour taken in and a catheter was inserted releasing a considerable amount of urine that had been building for well over 12 hours. I may add that I had hardly eaten, hardly drunk anything and not slept at all and felt on the point of collapse.

Following this I drove home but my leg bag started to creep down my leg but I was able to get it sorted at my GP practice. Very little instruction was given - just a book - but I had help from district nurses. I have had occasional problems with bags moving and tubing causing discomfort and also bleeding roughly once every week or two. I am now coping with this.

I want to know how I could not have been attended to at the hospital when I asked and why I had to wait, bursting for the toilet for between 12 and 15 hours. Ought I to have rung 999 again? As a result of this, I developed acute anxiety and any time I was asked to recount this experience I have been in floods of tears. It was because I cried in front of my doctor that he put me on medication for anxiety and arranged sessions with the hospital psychologist. I agreed to all this. Several of my friends incl former NHS staff have suggested this amounted to neglect. I shall be pleased to hear any views on the matter.
