I was diagnosed with Parkinsons at age 60. Initially I was under the care of Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and I was happy enough with their services. About 6 years my care was transferred to Medicine for the Elderly in Angus, principally under Dr Shaw and Parkinson's nurse Linda. I was not very happy about this because I had fears of being treated like a geriatric patient. The reality of the situation was totally different.
From Day 1 Dr Shaw has taken a great interest in how I deal with my Parkinson's and how it affects my life. He is very approachable and has encouraged and helped me to find ways of continuing with the activities that are important to me. I also know that I can make contact him through his secretary if I have any concerns.
Linda is also interested in my overall wellbeing, and in the early stages of our relationship challenged me to get back out into the world and get on with my life. I am extremely grateful to her for this and for the effect it has had on how I deal mentally with the effects of this disease.
From her professional experience she always has a helpful suggestion as to how to approach any problem that arises. As with Dr Shaw, I know that Linda is always available to talk to if required.
