I was referred to the Scottish Mesh Clinic recently and was told the waiting time was 100 weeks. I phoned several time to see if there were any cancellations as I had some distance to travel and at last I was given an appointment some 13 months later.
I was very apprehensive about this appointment although I had a telephone call from the lovely Lisa the week before and she put me at ease and explained how the day would go and how long I should expect to be there.
I arrived 15-20 minutes early and unsure as to where I was heading. A lovely paramedic arrived as I was reading the boards and asked if I was okay and if I needed help. I explained I didn't know my way around and he said come on I'll take you up to the area you need to be in.
I quickly arrived in the waiting room, fully expecting to have a wait and no sooner sat down when Lisa arrived and introduced herself. It was nice to put a face to a name and we chatted until Seonaid, the physio, was ready to see me once I had had the usual measurements taken.
Seonaid was lovely and very informative and made me feel very at ease. Near to the end of the appointment the colorectal consultant came in and introduced herself. She took me to another room and explained that she would discuss things with me before we were to be joined by Dr Tyagi. This consultation concluded and Dr Tyagi arrived with the nurse, Karen, and explained the next step of my assessment to have an ultrasound.
Everyone was so professional and friendly and explaining every step along this very pleasant patient journey. It was necessary for me to have a cystoscopy but I was told that if I did not feel up to it or felt it was too much at the one appointment this could be done locally at another time. I decided to go ahead and appreciated the care and dignified manner this was carried out, keeping me informed every step of the process.
Finally having seen a physio, psychologist, gynaecologist, urology team and colorectal consultant, my appointment was over. All involved explained that their findings would be put to the MDT and their findings relayed to me in due course.
I left my appointment feeling reassured and listened to, and felt I had had one of the best patient journeys ever and one that all patients should have - no waiting, reassured and informed every step of the way. Thank you so much to Dr Tyagi and the wonderful team at the Scottish Mesh Clinic in New Victoria Hospital, Glasgow.
Anyone waiting to be seen by them can be assured of a friendly team who will put you at ease and listen to your concerns!
