"The treatment of my mum"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C7 Haematology/Renal Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

I am not a person who usually complains, but I am afraid in this case I must. My mum attended Causeway ED recently.

She is currently awaiting several biopsy results, and seems to be suffering from some sort of blood disorder. She had been an inpatient in Antrim for the last week before being wrongfully discharged, in my view. I feel the doctor discharging her failed to answer any questions or concerns she had and stated she was stable enough and they needed her bed.

When I went to check on her she was so unwell she couldn't lift her head from the pillow, had a fever, lost control of her bladder and bowels and we had to arrange an ambulance to take her to hospital, Causeway ED.

Upon arrival she was greeted by a lovely doctor, who was very thorough and kind. The doctor should be commended for their work.

But once mum's tests came back it transpired she had COVID. A nurse then treated mum appallingly, it felt as though they couldn't get rid of mum quick enough. The nurse made mum walk the full length of the dept, because they didn't want to contaminate a wheelchair.

Please remember my mum couldn't lift her head at home. As soon as this nurse rang me to discharge mum, they got mum to pack her bag and walk out to sit in the corridor on a hard plastic chair opposite the ambulance entrance. Just before this happened mum soiled herself. The nurse did not help her change, but instead left her sitting in this corridor for 2 hours, soiled, until I could collect her. In that 2 hour window the nurse never once checked on mum or came to see if she had left.

I was completely devastated to see the state my mum was in when I arrived, given how unwell she has been and how concerned we were even before she contracted COVID. I feel the way this nurse treated my mum was inhumane, disgusting, and downright appalling. There was no care given at all.

I understand that people have bad days, but this was just so shockingly poor and I feel that the nurse in question needs to be reprimanded, as I want to avoid this happening to someone else's loved one.

Hi Volansdf46

My name is Victoria McCrory and I am the Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Causeway ED.

I am sorry that your mum has been unwell recently, and I am extremely apologetic for the experience which your mum had within the ED. This is not the standard of care we aim to achieve and does not align with the trust core values.

Due to the seriousness of your concerns, I would recommend that these are followed up through a more formal process. If you and your mum wish for me to review this case in more detail please contact me via my email or telephone contact number below.

Yours Sincerely

Victoria McCrory
