(as a service user),

I had a meeting with my case manager from NHS England.. During our conversation I highlighted the fact I had no educational sessions such as maths, English, IT. She stated that it is a legal requirement in psychiatric units. This affected myself due to a dip in my motivation and focus on my pathway towards future employment beyond hospital. I know I need to work towards L1-2 in maths and IT

Due to all TES staff being deployed to the wards for the majority of 2023 all patients missed out on purposeful activities and importantly educational sessions. I rose this with my case manager who agreed this is unacceptable. The inability to complete these sessions during the staffing crisis affected my mood, motivation and focus on the future

Thank you for posting about your current experience with patients' education. As you correctly pointed out TES staff have been redeployed to the wards to cover nursing duties whilst we are facing difficult times. There is a recovery plan that has been put in place by the senior leadership team. Currently, education staff are still being used to cover nursing duties. Each week 10 staff are identified from across the care-stream day units to be released to help facilitate patient sessions. Education staff form part of that number and some education is still happening, albeit ad hoc due to the circumstances. This is similar for the other disciplines in TES.

In the next phase of the recovery plan, we are hoping to release the Band 5 teachers as more staff are recruited to nursing posts. This is due to be implemented towards the end of October and when this happens, we will be able to offer a more structured programme.

I do hope you are able to find the motivation to continue with education as we move forward through these difficult times. The staff are looking forward to working full time with patients again in their education roles. We are able to offer some sessions on and off ward, please speak to an education staff or your OT if you see them on your ward and let them know you would like to reengage with some education.
