"Care received"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I had been very ill for a week and under the advice of my GP attending the hospital. I was severely dehydrated and required fluids.

I was taken fairly quickly in A&E but repeatedly left for periods of time without fluids. I was seen by a doctor who advised they didn’t know what was wrong and decided to push 3nr antibiotics. A&E requested a urine sample and sent me to a communal toilet - I struggled to get to the toilet and back because I was so unsteady on my feet and very breathless.

They decided to keep me in to run further tests. I was moved to medical assessment unit. There I was told repeatedly to take paracetamol despite advising that I was unable to keep anything down. Nobody was willing to help with my sickness - I was forced to used the communal toilet to be sick. The communal toilet was dirty from other people’s bowel movement.

The nurses told me sickness was not actually a symptom it was due to my fever and that whilst I was having a fever I would not be discharged.

The consultant came in mid morning and advised me I had glandular fever, sepsis and hepatitis. More bloods were taken and then a nurse told me I was discharged. I was in no fit state to walk myself out the hospital. Nurses deemed me unable to walk to a vending machine for a drink but I was to get changed and walk out? Nobody told me what to expect when I get home, I did not think I was fit enough to go home; especially not to be walking out into the street myself.

I was then told to come back the following Monday for bloods and an ultra sound. I duly came in via the A&E entrance as per the appointment card. The receptionist implied I should not have come in that entrance then directed me to the correct unit. My bloods were taken promptly and I was then advised it would be 2 pm before my ultra sound.

My father was with me and raised this issue with the nurse on reception. He asked them if they thought it acceptable? They would not engage and advised he was being very rude because he’s not allowed to query the flow of works.

We then had to wait hours again after the ultra sound to see a consultant. Nobody would tell us how long I would need to wait.

Finally I seen the consultant and they advised me I never had sepsis and had not hit any of the markers - I had repeatedly been told I was hitting the markers when I was admitted.

I feel I am repeatedly being told limited/vague/conflicting information and repeatedly being left for indefinite periods of time which I do not think is acceptable.

Dear Megan825

Thanks you for sharing your story on care opinion about University Hospital Monklands. I am sorry to hear that you had to attend the Emergency Department due to severe dehydration and you did not have a positive experience there or in the medical Assessment Unit. I can only imagine that when you were feeling unwell, not getting any answers to your questions or being left for long periods of time with no information that this could be very frustrating for you. We want to make things better for all our patients and all feedback is valuable to us.

It would be helpful if you could contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Monklands so that they can understand the issues in more detail.
