"Trapped in a ward"

About: University Hospital Monklands / General Surgery (Wards 4 & 7) University Hospital Monklands / Renal (Ward 1)

(as a relative),

My twin had recently undergone major cancer surgery and was admitted with a kidney infection in Monklands Hospital.

Monklands hospital is alien to residents of rural Clydesdale as it is difficult to get to by car and even more difficult to get a parking place. Public transport can result in at least 3 bus journeys.

As Monklands Hospital provides specialised services for pan Lanarkshire and other neighbouring Health Board areas, it can be difficult for family and friends to visit patients on a regular basis.

My brother had a previous mental health issue which resulted in a temporary section due to over prescribed medication. The same over prescription a few years ago damaged his oesophagus resulting in his cancer.

His mental wellbeing was strained as he felt trapped in his ward unable to venture out on his own due to his low blood pressure and his catheter.

If only a volunteer could take similar patients for a walk outside to help their wellbeing and speed up their recovery. Such volunteers exist in hospitals in England.

My brother was overwhelmed with the care he received from clinical and non clinical staff, but recognised how busy they all were.

Basil thank you for your comments and I am sorry to hear about your brothers experience of Monklands Hospital. I agree the location of the hospital can make it difficult for patients and relatives to spend time with each other and therefor understand how your brother could feel isolated and "trapped" There are some volunteers who assist patients with meals etc. but perhaps what you describe is something that could be looked into by the organisation.
