I felt and still feel extremely concerned about the length of time a patient in discomfort/distress/pain, basically, all the reasons why one is there in the first place is left in a corridor of Admissions, ward 15 at Ninewells Hospital. This can last a duration of 6 hours plus awaiting a bed.
This is an awful situation for the patient, staff trying to manoeuvre around patients in corridors, ambulance drivers who need to get back on their job. Recent experience evidenced no health and safety practice, lack of confidentiality, no dignity or respect for patients in corridors waiting and looking into the bays where patients are in their beds.
I feel it is unfair to expect nursing and medical staff to work on a daily basis in such circumstances. Despite my concerns being submitted to the chief executive of NHS Tayside at the time of my experience, I would be most surprised if the overcrowding situation has changed. I would like to say that all concerned do an incredible job, but legislations are not being met and it's not sustainable. I would imagine that A and E is a similar situation.
