"One nurse has tainted an otherwise impressive experience"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Surgical Receiving Unit (Ward 4)

(as the patient),

I was brought by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital in acute pain. The A&E Department was exemplary and I was well looked after. On arrival at Ward 4 I was taken care of by nurses again in an excellent way. I would also like to say that the doctors were always fantastic.

On my 4th day I was due for a second CT scan, the doctors had explained that I would need 2 cups of a special drink beforehand. In the morning a nurse marched into the ward, announced that they weren't well but that it wasn't covid. They were coughing and spluttering, they came to me and said I would need 3 drinks and I had to remind her as she wasn't feeling well. After my 2nd drink the doctors came round and I asked if I had to take 3 drinks, they said no, it's 2.

After completing the CT scan, I was on a drip and I rang for help as it wasn't working properly. An orderly switched it off and said she would get a nurse. I waited and waited for a very very long time. I needed to use the bathroom.

The nurse with the bad cold then came blustering up to me and pulled the drip bag off and said 'to take it to the bathroom. Let me explain I had 2 canula in my right arm, one on the back of my hand and one in my arm, I was in pain and couldn't have managed. I told them that, they just grabbed the bag and walked away with it.

The nurses attitude was hostile and angry. Atrocious! They were coughing a lot and I feel should not even have been in a ward full of very ill people! I was so upset by this and also a very snarky comment they made to me that when the doctors came round with my results I told them I wanted to be discharged.

I am on pills at home now instead of on drips in hospital because of this nurse. I feel this is unprofessional and unacceptable behaviour.

Absolutely every other member of staff was wonderful and this one nurse has tainted an otherwise Impressive experience at Hairmyres Hospital.

Dear Bright Star

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. I am sorry to read that you found one particular nurse to be unprofessional and symptomatic of respiratory illness whilst on duty.

I am concerned to hear that there were inappropriate comments made to you and that you felt you needed to go home. I wonder if you are now on oral antibiotics rather than the intravenous which may be normal practice.

I would like to look into your experience further so that nursing staff can reflect and learn. I would be grateful if you would contact patient affairs on tel:

or email: PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Again my apologies that your experience was tainted by one individual. This is not the standard that I would expect.

I hope that you are recovering well and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Lise
