"Didn't expect to be waiting so long"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services

(as the patient),

I feel very bad, came in with a very bad shoulder pain. I was given a pain killer and was told to wait. It's now 4.5 hours later, and still waiting to be seen by a doctor. The hospital car park is empty and no patient movement. In the country I come from, if we go to the A&E by 15-20 mins we are checked and given medication and all is taken care of. It's a bit sad to see this. I think they could have a dedicated doctor to look into this. Really don't know. Didn't expect this.

Dear julybe44

thank you for posting your story about your recent visit to our department. It appears you were disappointed and your expectations not met.

I cannot comment on the effectiveness of individual countries Health Care Systems, however it appears that you were given medication by us, in line with your home country. We have a number of patient streams into the Emergency Department and our patient flow is dictated by a number of factors and resources available to us. Unfortunately, it may appear that there is no patient movement, but I can assure you, we do all we can to ensure patient are seen promptly, based on their clinical need. This can lead to unfortunate delays.

The hospital car park is managed by an external agency, and I cannot comment on why this was empty. Someone from the external agencies may be happy to comment further.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of a number of services available to the public, in order to alleviate the pressures on our Emergency Departments. Our local GP services, Out-of-hours GP, local pharmacists and phone first systems, are readily available to guide and direct you to the right course of action.

Finally I hope you are making and good recovery from you recent illness/injury.

kind regards

John Kerr
