"Poor hospital experience"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I arrived at Medway hospital after attending a 999 event and having sudden bleeding while nearly 13 weeks pregnant. As you can imagine it was very distressing. I was met with a receptionist who ignored my reason for coming in and offer no sense of care considering I was stood in the waiting room covered in blood and registered me in a rather chemical way then just stopped speaking and began a conversation with their colleagues about their weekend where I had to ask if we were finished and what I should do now.

After standing in a crowded waiting room for 2 hours I was seen by another rude member of staff who proceeded to ask more details from me and offer me no sense of care thrusting a urine sample pot at me and waving me off to the toilet. Upon return they sent me back to the waiting room for another half an hour before calling me back to inform me they had just realised I didn’t live in the area so isn’t much they can do but book me in to see someone sometime this week. Again I’m sure you can imagine the distress this caused me when asked is there really nothing you can do as I’ve been here 2 hours and only now is someone telling me a hospital can’t help me.  I was told they would give me a pad and it’s not like they can stop it happening.  Throughout this conversation many other nurses/doctors came in and out talking over me to ask for things which this particular nurse answered without a second thought while I stood crying.

I can respect that there is limited services and I rarely, if ever use the NHS, and am aware of the strain they are under but when I walked in and registered why was there no acknowledgement of the fact they’d be unlikely to help me in anyway and why did it take 2 hours and 2 face to face conversations to realise I wasn’t from the area and how a hospital can do absolutely nothing to support a patient in an emergency situation.

The 2 hours I spent standing in Medway urgent care waiting room could have affected my outcome drastically.
