About: Outpatients Department / Fracture Clinic

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

The registrar  was very nice. They wanted the dressing taken down and sutures removed. The senior HCA introduced themselves and proceeded to put on an apron and gloves but didn't wash their hands. I asked politely about hand washing. They informed me they didn't need to as they were wearing gloves.  They did remove the sutures competently. They were less knowledgeable about the correct procedure for applying the leg brace.

I am disappointed that the 5 moments of hand hygiene were not applied. There is really no excuse as there is plenty of soap and water in an acute hospital. I noticed hand hygiene audit was 100% for the unit. I wondered how could that could be because what I witnessed was not the case.

I want to say the nurse was perfectly pleasant.

Thank you for taking your time to acknowledge your visit and treatment within our department.It is appreciated that you found the registrar very nice and the nurse perfectly pleasant.It is disappointing that you felt the 5 moments of hand hygiene were not adhered to.I will highlight your concerns in our next safety brief and reinforce the 5 moments of hand hygiene among staff.We will use this feedback as a learning opportunity.Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

I didn't feel. I actually witnessed it. I told the nurse politely and they insisted that they didn't have to 'because I am wearing gloves and I am only taking off the dressing' I know what I am looking at.
