I was seen by Paula and I felt she was very experienced, knowledgeable and helpful. She listened to my issues and was considerate and polite.
I have had hearing difficulties for many years and have seen many many different so called experts. Paula explained all the procedures and the pros and cons of the various devices that might be suitable. She was approachable and friendly. Her infection control procedures were very good.
As a deaf person we rely on the verbal cues and facial expressions when the person is speaking. My one gripe about the consultation is that Paula wore a mask and was somewhat hesitant to remove it. In the end opted for a visor. It is never my intention to cause harm to another person and yes Covid is still around. I have meet many other health professionals who spend hours at the beauty salon hairdresser etc. It begs the question should these people where masks?
I work in health and most of my patients are elderly and they find it difficult to hear or communicate with masks. The same applies to patients and families with difficult outcomes. They want to see the human behind the mask. I am not saying ditch the mask. I think in certain circumstances we have to work with the patient. There is the risk to both the patient and professional.
Communication in my experience is one of the most important tools we have at our disposal. Let's not get over zealous about masks they are a tool to be used but don't provide a steel ring around you.
