Whilst I was at Sherwood Oaks there were doors slamming constantly, alarms repeatedly going off behind reception, where the staff are too busy talking about personal topics to mind. But the icing on the cake for me was listening to a staff member (30 minutes after a fire alarm test),  explaining to a another staff member how in the case of a fire, people on the wards and upstairs can't get out without keys and they don't usually take keys upstairs. The other staff member confirmed it had been like that for a while

thankyou for taking the time to post about your experiences

we do appreciate how noisy acute wards can be at times and will ensure this is discussed in community meetings regarding doors etc

I am concerned regarding the fire comments you overheard and would like to understand this more, my details are below if you would like to make contact

I would like to reassure you all staff are fire trained and everyone has access to security keys/fobs and alarms wherever they work in the building

I am very concerned to read these issues and will liaise with the relevant teams to work through them.

All keys do have fire keys attached to them so I will need to check that people are able to access the keys effectively.

Amy. Thank-you, I can appreciate that it takes time to get a response, grateful for your support in getting my issues raised.

Kirsty! You can assure me all you like. I clearly heard staff admitting they don't always take keys to the ward. So having access to keys isn't an issue, having vulnerable people locked in a ward while the fire alarm is sounding, or the buildings burning down, that's my concern. How often do your staff leave vulnerable people at risk? And I'm sorry but either you misunderstood, or misread. I was sat in the reception area. With the slamming doors, and crash door alarm, watching people struggled to communicate with the reception staff. Honestly if you can appreciate how noisy an acute ward can be, I'm sure you can comprehend that a reception area in a building that serves people with mental health issues ought to be receptive of them. A community meeting won't fix the slamming door.

Thanks Jo. It's great that you'll be checking up on the key issue, I'm sure it's as simple as reminding staff if they don't have keys, they're making bad choices for other people.
