"Adequate pain relief"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I recently had a procedure done at hospital where I was being investigated for post menopausal bleeding. I was advised to take some pain relief prior to attending, which I did in the form of paracetamol.

During the procedure I was advised I needed some biopsies taken, which the nurse proceeded to take. This was extremely painful, in fact I would go further and say that I believe this is barbaric.

I had a biopsy last year of my stomach where I was given pain relief prior to it, why then when having this procedure is it acceptable to offer nothing?

This is not a painless procedure - I required 3 biopsies this day and a coil fitted and was offered the very patronising remark that I did so well.

This has to be looked at, as I don't think you can continue to carry out this procedure without offering adequate pain relief. I don't think women should be treated like this!

Dear mayms89

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. I am sorry to read that you suffered such pain and discomfort during your procedure. Ensuring patient comfort and adequate pain relief should be a priority and I apologise that we did not get this right for you.

I will review current practice and plan to learn from your feedback to ensure staff communicate effectively and that provision of analgesia is considered and planned.

It is important that women feel listened to and please be assured that your comments will be shared so that we make changes and improve comfort for others.

Thank you

Lise
