I was in the dermatology ward for a routine biopsy recently, with stitches to be removed 10 days later.
7 days later the wound ruptured and was badly infected. I attended RAH NHS 24, who refused to treat me as they said the ward responsible should attend to it and take responsibility. The measurement of the wound was 4cm x 3cm 1cm deep and badly infected.
The doctor in Out of Hours said the person on duty would sort it out for the following Monday. I went home and my wife took responsibility for removing the stitches (she is a nurse) as she said the stitches were aggravating the wound. She then cleaned and dressed the wound.
On the Monday I phoned the ward. Nobody knew anything about the incident. To say the least I was very frustrated and angry not to mention the pain. By pure chance a nurse that knew me was on duty and agreed to see me between their own appointments. On arrival I was taken to a treatment room and the nurses and asst nurses did their best.
Over 10/11 weeks I have been treated approx 15 times as the wound would heal then break out again. A doctor visited the treatment room to check if I needed another course of antibiotics - it was decided no, carry on with the dressings. I have received an appointment from the doctor who did the biopsy in two months' time for follow up.
During the 11 weeks of treatment the staff have tried many different approaches to heal this wound . One nurse took personal interest and followed up virtually on most of my visits, for that they stand out as a professional, caring person, thank you.
