I have recently completed a series of appointments with a Physiotherapist called Lucy, based at Falkirk Community Hospital.
My MS nurse referred me because my MS is progressing and has worsened. I get very sore and tired legs and fatigue. I took my husband to the appointments. We both found that helpful, to listen to Lucy and for both of us to contribute to the conversation and expert advice.
Lucy gave me a series of exercises to carry out, she also suggested a foot bike. She gave me a very holistic support, looking at lifestyle and carrying out tasks. I kept daily lists of what I wanted to accomplish each day. It helped me see that I try and do too much. I need time to recharge and that it is absolutely okay not to be doing anything, and to stop feeling guilty about it. It isn’t easy but I’m learning the value of pacing myself. The important things in my life are my family, socialising with my friends, keeping fit and finding time to exercise. My husband and I are discussing the benefits of hiring a gardener and a cleaner. I don’t have the energy I used to. I’m not physically the same. I’m learning not to be so hard on myself.
I have enjoyed my sessions with Lucy. She is such a kind and lovely person. Lucy listens and gives very sensible advice. The exercise regimes are very do-able. I was very surprised to learn the value of pacing. Pacing every day task, breaking them down into smaller bits. Thinking about what really needs done. What can wait until I have more energy. The impact that doing too much has on my overall well being.
I have a wheel chair now. I can go further in a wheel chair and save my energy for something else. I’m even considering an electric scooter. It is a means to an end not the end. I can still walk but I don’t get so much muscle stiffness and pain if I am mindful and pace myself.
My husband and I are planning to find a bungalow. Planning ahead and taking help and support where offered will enable us to achieve this.
Thank you so much Lucy, your input to my life has been amazing and thought provoking .
