"Accompanying my daughter"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

We went to the x-ray department to get my little girl's wrist checked out. I was there over half hour to realise four people went in before that came after her. Turns out they forgot to put her paperwork through and it was on the desk in front of the member of staff that forgot to put her name on the list.

My daughter was then called in, for her to be told she would have to go in on her own when she's 7 years old. I said no, I would like to come in with her as I don't feel comfortable with that, to be then treated like I shouldn't be in there.

End of the day, she's 7 years old and think any mum or dad wouldn't let them in, after all she's under 16 and a minor. They also asked her the questions that she didn't know, I confirmed them to be looked at funny as if I did something wrong.

I can't stress enough that in this day and age not wanting a mum or dad in the room rings alarm bells with me. I do think this is wrong and the staff should let parents in the room and shouldn't need to be told they can't come in and for them to ask a child mum can stay outside without asking me first is not at all professional, in my view - she's 7, not 16.

I hope this is taken seriously and not just pushed aside.

Thanks

Good afternoon,

I am just following up on my previous message. Your concern has been shared with the Division and with the wider Radiology staff teams. The team acknowledge your concerns and agree that it was not acceptable for you to be asked for your daughter to have the X ray alone.

As an organisation we use all patient feedback to support learning and for continuous improvement so please be assured that the team are taking your concerns seriously and pass on their sincere apologies. Though the experience you describe was not positive, I would like to thank you for sharing this.

Kind regards

Aoife Isherwood
