"The nice environment, facilities and excellent staff help lift the spirit"

About: Cancer Services / Day Patient Area - Chemotherapy Cancer Services / Radiotherapy Ninewells Hospital / Xrays and scans

(as the patient),

I attended an appointment at the Princess Alexandra Suite Day Centre. The purpose of the appointment was a Pre-Chemo Assessment that required giving blood.

Nurse Diane explained details of the combined treatment of injected & tablet forms of chemotherapy. The meeting went well and Diane and took blood then showed me around the ward explaining how the procedure was likely to happen. All very painless and very well explained & shown.

Medical information & procedures were explained thoroughly. Diane was very helpful and considerate fully explaining how treatment is likely to progress and the possible side effects and gave advice to obtain a thermometer if I was required to convey my temperature over the phone.

The information provided by Diane provided insight and reduced anxiety levels significantly. Diane also provided a small blue book containing pertinent information and yellow forms so that various side effects could be recorded as treatment progressed. Excellent work. Thank you.

In the Chemotherapy Day Centre Senior Nurse Felicity introduced herself and explained the process and showed me where to sit. Later Sara and Laura administered the treatment.

All went well and after approximately an 90mins the chemotherapy injection was complete. Thereafter staff provided the remaining chemotherapy tablets that are to be taken twice daily except weekends over a 28 day period. Excellent staff who know their job and deliver with super care. All very well organised and explained well whilst giving the care.

In Radiotherapy a requirement was that the bladder is full so that it pushes other organs out of the way and allows the radiotherapy to accurately target the cancerous area.

Receptionists Jackie Bob and Karen advise on timing and appropriate hydration so that the blader is full and treatment can commence at the specified appointment time. This process literally runs like clockwork and the receptionists are so caring and considerate.

Jackie escorted me to the Radiology machine room and introduced me to the team operating the machine. All went well and after approximately 10 mins the process was complete for one day. Thereafter a 10min treatment of radiology is given each weekday for 28 days.

Currently I'm on day twelve and all appointments have been so well managed and staff have been so nice, friendly and professional. I could not find anything that warranted the smallest of complaints.

Excellent staff who all know their job well and work very well as a larger team delivering with super care and top interpersonal skills. All very well organised and super caring.

The environment of Radiology at Ninewells Hospital is quite uplifting. Stairs descend to a basement level. However once a bright wide corridor with one wall depicting a timeline of Radiology is traversed the Radiology Department is reached. It too is open and spacious and well designed with a curved main waiting area that is light and bright. Daylight floods in from upper windows at ground level into the main waiting area that also hosts a reception desk, chilled stainless steel water dispenser and super clean toilets. The combination of the nice environment, facilities and excellent staff help lift the spirit of what can be a very dark time.
