I attended A&E at FVRH recently with my adult daughter, a full time wheelchair user, after an injury to her knee.
Firstly I would like to say I was pleasantly surprised by the length of time we were there. 4.5 hrs from arrival until release including getting X-rays. Staff were pleasant, and despite not all understanding my daughter's conditions, they were happy to be educated and were asking questions - that doesn’t always happen.
My issue is one of accessibility. The gurneys in the a&e department are a good 4 inches higher than safe transfer height and unable to be lowered. This meant that the doctors were examining her in her chair which they admitted wasn’t ideal and also that despite being injured she had to sit in her wheelchair the entire time which can put her at risk of pressure sores and blood clots.
I don’t understand why a medical facility does not have suitable equipment to allow for safe self transfer from a standard wheelchair for someone who is non weight bearing.
