After waiting 4 weeks for the results of a biopsy I phoned my consultant to see if they had the results, I was told they have the results but couldn't tell me over the phone and that my consultant was on holiday for another week and he would send the results to me when he returns. This has left me worrying longer than need be and I can't understand why my consultant took my case on if he wasn't going to be there for the results! I feel poorly treated by this poor hospital and feel like I the patient is not the priority. I phoned the complaints department and no one answered the phone after 5 attempts I gave up.

We are sorry to hear how you feel. The usual process is that results are viewed by the consultant who will then dictate a letter to the GP, with a copy to the patient, informing them of the results and any further treatment if required. Secretaries are not able to give results over the phone to patients as they are not clinical. Consultants in dermatology are required to give at least six weeks notice prior to annual leave but we do understand the worry this has caused you and have raised this with the department’s manager. We are also sorry to hear you were unable to reach the complaints team. If you wish to discuss the matter further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).
