My daughter was admitted to ward 3C having been placed in traction in A&E following a type 4 proximal femur fracture. She was made to fast and was advised she would go to theatre to be placed in a spica cast that morning. However, no slots became available that morning and she was 2nd on the afternoon theatre list. This was a very stressful and traumatic time for me, seeing my young daughter in such distress and pain. The nurses and students on the ward were very supportive and great at making sure both my daughter and I were OK.
I got to stay overnight with her in a single bed at the side of her cot bed. No one advised this was a pull down bed and must be put away each morning. In a vulnerable state that I was, a member of staff came in and pulled me up in what I feel was a rude and abrupt manner, telling me the bed should be folded away and bags on hooks for them coming in daily.
Which is fine and fair enough, I respect they have a job to do, however there is a way to speak to people and their, in my view, disgraceful attitude, sheer cheek and lack of bedside manner I feel needs to be addressed immediately. Their cleaning floors was the least of my worries while my baby was fasting and awaiting a general anaesthetic.
I was already in an emotional and vulnerable state, had they got me unlike this they would have got a stronger mouthful back. However that’s where the problem is, I feel they picked on a vulnerable parent and it’s a disgrace. Not to mention the pink sign on the patient door clearly stating my daughter was fasting, for them to have the audacity to offer my daughter a chocolate bar, after I told them no one told me about their bed rules etc.
I’m enraged with how this member of staff barged into my daughter's room unannounced and verbally pounced on me, meanwhile my daughter was very poorly. The bed was made, I was sat at a seat next to the cot and I’m yet to see the issue.
My daughter left for theatre and my husband and I accompanied her there, only to return to find this member of staff had been back in the room and moved our personal belongings with no permission and bags up on hooks etc. Totally unacceptable, in my opinion!
