"The first time I felt good leaving my appointment"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Macmillan Health and Well Being Campus Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Radiotherapy cancer services

(as the patient),

I had just left Radiotherapy and went to the Macmillan info and support service in Altnagelvin Hospital.

I was coming out of radiotherapy and I happened to look around and see the Macmillan info service - I was looking for guidance about travel expenses, and the girl was sitting there and she said come and take a seat. I said don’t worry if it’s lunch time and she said don’t worry about lunch let’s sit you down.

She was so so lovely and I was there an hour, she was that kind and caring and was telling me about all the support I can get and the help and financial help and talking to me about how I was feeling and stuff and she didn’t have to do that.

I just wanted to say that she was a diamond and I came out feeling good for the first time after leaving radiotherapy because she was that lovely. She is a Macmillan support worker and for me and my husband, we were gobsmacked by how kind and caring she was, I apologised to say I’m sorry it’s lunch time, but she didn’t mind.

I said to my husband when we left that that’s the first time I’ve felt good coming out, even though the radiotherapy people are so good and lovely themselves, but for her to sit down and talk to me and my husband for an hour was so so lovely, I just had to say something because she’s a diamond, and was actually so caring and lovely.

Going through a hard time, it was lovely to sit and talk and everything she comes out with, she knows what you’re going through more or less, so it was nice to talk to her, and I just wanted to let people know that there are people out there that care and love.

Hi lionmm93,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent experience with the Macmillan Information and Support service.

We always strive to provide a person centred service that will help and support individuals (and their families) at a time they need it the most and saying that you 'felt good coming out of your appointment' is a testimony to that.

Your kind words are appreciated and thank you for sharing so that other people are made aware of this service which is available to anyone affected by cancer within the Western Trust by calling: 07342075636/ 02871 611139.

Kind regards

Martha

Hi lionmm93

thank you for taking the time to post this really positive feedback. You don't mention the name of the person you spoke with but I suspect it may have been my colleague Martha who has already replied to your post and is our Macmillan Information & Support Manager.

We are so pleased to hear that you and your husband felt supported and listened to and that you were able to find out about some of the services you can avail of.

Please do not hesitate to contact us on 07342075636/ 02871 611139 if there's anything else we can help with. Please also know that the Macmillan Support Centre is open 9-5 Monday to Friday and is located away from North West Cancer Centre opposite outpatients. You can call for a chat or a cup of tea and for information and support

Best wishes

Lesley
