"Poor communication and attitude"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Short Stay Medicine

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

It was my first visit to see my Sister in ward 103 since her admission. I decided to take in a coffee and have five minutes with her before I started work.

The first member of senior staff I came across had what I found to be an overbearing, rude and curt demeanour and refused me access to visit with my Sister or even take the coffee to her. They  did however take the coffee to my Sister and advise her I had attempted to visit. They did also tell me to try again later. I did try later and again was spoken to in a wholly unacceptable manner. This occurred as I was leaving the ward and I advised a different staff member at the nurses station that the soap dispenser in my Sister's room wasn't working. The senior staff member, who was at this point at the nurses station overheard my observation, spoke over the nurse I was advising of the faulty dispenser and in a wholly unacceptable manner, advised me it had been reported that morning, and then repeated herself.

I mentioned this to family members when I visited later that morning and was surprised to hear that the senior staff member had come into my Sister's room after I had left, tried the dispenser and in a voice loud enough for all present to hear said that it was working and they had just washed their hands. They were called out immediately for not washing their hands or trying the dispenser by two other patients in the room.

Why would they feel the need to try and make a ridiculous point, if the faulty dispenser had been reported that morning? I am not alone with my displeasure with this staff member, several of my family have encountered this wholly unacceptable attitude also.
