"An empathic manner is fundamental to patient care"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as a relative),

I felt spoken to like an idiot by the midwife who would also not provide a name when speaking over the top of me (then said they were terminating the call when challenged about this by having the audicity to say I was speaking over them) as my wife's wishes were not being listened to.

I find it absolutely astounding that a public servant was unwilling to give their name due to fact they know a complaint might be heading their way. This service which should be the most empathetic seems the least trauma-informed service in the NHS.

My wife has patient rights and was quoted guidelines which do not apply as she has the right to control how a miscarriage is dealt with whether  medical or surgical, the same as a patient who would want a termination.

It felt like to me that they are trying to hide behind their own guidelines which are not an act of law, whilst I believe ignoring the Patient's Right's Scotland Act 2011 - which states that the patient has the right to determine access to and what treatment will be the most beneficial for their own health and well-being.

Supporting people in an empathic manner and showing that staff actually care is fundamental to patient care. A simple "sorry for your loss" seems to have been replaced by talk about guidelines.

Dear xraybz54,

I am disappointed to hear about your experience. This is not the compassionate service we aim to provide. I would really like to look into this further with your wife's consent. If you would like to contact me on the email address below with further details I will be more than happy to explore this.

Your Sincerely,

Tracy Orr

Lead Midwife
