I have a genetic condition called Heamochromatosis. The only treatment is Venesection at a hospital where you have blood taken. Before covid I was receiving regular care and Venesection at the Medical Day Centre in Wishaw General.
It is now Liver Nurses who are dealing with this treatment but I have not had any appointments for treatment for over 3 years. I have HFE bloods every 3 months and phone the Liver Nurses with my results. I am informed when I call there are no appointments available and my Ferritin levels have to be much higher.
I noticed a letter in Glasgow Herald from Haemochromatosis UK to Wishaw General highlighting this problem as they had received complaints from people in Lanarkshire. I have spoken to Haemochromatosis UK about my situation and they say they would never recommend ferritin to reach such a level as it can be detrimental to your health.
I am extremely concerned about it but have no idea when my treatment will start again.
