"Uncomfortable experience in ED"

About: Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had reason recently to visit Ulster Hospital ED for the third time since the beginning of July. This time I was seriously unwell with abdominal pain, projectile vomiting etc. Unfortunately the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were unable to respond within a reasonable time and therefore other arrangements had to be made to get me to the hospital.

I was triaged reasonably quickly and then sent back to the waiting room before bloods being taken. When the results all came back I was told that they were normal and that they didn’t know what was causing the issue and was sent home. When I followed up with the GP the next day I was told that there was in fact something that showed on the bloods and that was that my white cells were high showing signs of an infection somewhere. Therefore we were clearly misinformed at the hospital which is very disappointing.

A lot of my time was also spent in the general waiting area which was not convenient. The hospital was very quiet by its usual standards and it would’ve been more appropriate in my opinion had I been given a trolley or a more comfortable chair in the treatment area while I was there as there were other people there also. I had only a hard chair to sit on in the treatment area when receiving treatment through IV.

I appreciate the pressures that the NHS are under but it was disappointing that I was told incorrect information and also disappointing that I wasn’t as comfortable as I should’ve been given how ill I was.

Dear Ulster2000

Thank you for sharing the story of your care experience.

I am very sorry to learn of the elements described that should have been better and apologise to you for this.

I have connected with our Emergency department Lead Nurse Leanne Wilson. Leanne would like to review your care at an indvidual level and make a personal response to you - as opposed to a service-level response.

If you wish to have a personal review and response, please contact me by email at conor.campbell@setrust.hscni.net to provide your name / date of birth / address / date of attendance and contact information.

Again, I apologise for the elements of your care that could have been better.

Thank you very much

Conor

Good morning Ulster2000,

I would like to begin by thanking you for taking the time to share your experience of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. As an organisation we are committed to consistently show compassion, professionalism and respect for the patients we care for, so it was disappointing to learn that on this occasion, the service was unable to meet your expectations. With regards to our response times please be assured that we are working closely with the Department of Health and the Strategic Planning and Performance Group to increase our available resources. We are also working with the local EDs to try to ensure that our patients can be handed over to hospital clinical teams as quickly as possible so that ambulance are able to respond to further emergencies. Once again, I would like to apologise for your experiences and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Best wishes

Neil
