"Helped in our time of need!"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Whilst on holiday our little girl became very distressed and we had no idea why. After exhausting all options we rang 111 who gave us a number for a local GP in the area. We got referred straight to the children’s ward as the Dr didn’t like how sick she looked. Immediately when we arrived we were made to feel comfortable and reassured, given that we were so far away from home and very stressed.

Our little girl had multiple tests to identify what the problem was, and given treatment through a cannula. We got moved to a lovely, well equipped room with our own toilet facilities and TV. Some kind nurses gave us plenty of toys from the playroom to help entertain her when she wasn’t feeling very well. We ended up having an overnight stay to check that treatment was working. I  stayed with her in a pull out bed next to her and thought the overnight staff were so kind in helping get her back to sleep in the 4 hourly observations she had to have throughout the night.

She was kindly given a beautiful knitted teddy, handmade blanket and a storybook that she was able to take home with her. These little touches helped tremendously and made the situation more bearable. Not only was she looked after but as parents, we were looked after too. The hospital staff during both the day and the night made sure we had something to drink, access to food and be there to answer any questions we had at whatever time. Once discharged we got given access to the children’s ward and a telephone number to ring in case anything went wrong, until the end of our holiday as we were from out of area. This gave us even more reassurance knowing that we had this.

We cannot rate this hospital any higher and want to say the biggest thank you to everyone who helped us in our time of need!

Dear Gem17, thank you so much for your lovely comments. We are very lucky locally to receive lots of lovely donations from people which do enhance the care provided and we feel make the child's stay in hospital a wee bit more pleasant.

I am glad that the nurses and doctors looked after you all. It must have been quite frightening being away from home with a poorly child.

Its a shame that you had to come to hospital with your daughter but hopefully she is better now and you managed to get some quality time to enjoy the remainder of your holiday.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I will make sure that I share it with the staff on the ward

Regards

kirstine Burns
