I was sent to A&E Altnagelvin last week with my teenage daughter by our GP who was suspecting appendicitis. We arrived to a very crowded A&E dept at 6.00pm. Triage was almost a 90 min wait and I felt all I done was check in again. The nurse in triage did my daughters observations and then told us to wait for a doctor to be called.
We were called 30 min later by a care assistant who took bloods and then sent us back to wait. We waited a further 2 hours to be called by Dr Rice. He put my daughter at ease from the moment he introduced himself, explained in detail how he was going to examine her. He explained her blood results and then did a physical exam. He was confident that she didn't have appendicitis and asked for a urine sample even the look of the sample he suspected at UTI before testing and then came back and confirmed by showing us the test strip.
He reassured us that my daughter definitely didn't have appendicitis and gave us antibiotics but also told us that he was on all weekend and if she was to get any worse over the weekend to come back and ask specifically for him as he had treated her now and knew how she had presented medically.
If our GP had took the time to check the urine sample provided we could have saved resources at the hospital and been treated at home. But I am very grateful to Dr Rice for his professionalism and compassion and respect shown to my daughter. We need more Drs like him
