I was diagnosed with Stage 2, Lobular Breast Cancer in January 2023. Throughout the journey at/with the Breast Unit, at the Western General in Edinburgh, I have been treated with care and respect and I have nothing but praise for a busy, under-resourced but utterly magnificent department.
Hugely nervous for my first visit, the team put me quickly at ease and the expertise and professionalism of the Ultrasound and Mammography team downstairs was quite outstanding. Specialist support nurses readily offer the additional information which you forget to ask the consultant, and answer what may seem like daft questions - without batting an eyelid or suggesting I might have been (or continue to be) wasting their time. Nothing was too much trouble, nor any question deemed silly.
A post mastectomy complication, and infection, led to having to have a second operation but throughout I was monitored carefully and kept fully informed of how I was doing (which wasn’t always terribly well). The staff in Ward 6 have been particularly brilliant - professional, compassionate, empathetic, friendly and always under staffing pressures. I extend my grateful thanks to them all. I am now well enough to return to work and have signed up for the full 26 miles of the Moonwalk in September to raise funds for this wonderful unit. Thank you, thank YOU.
"Excellent care in the Breast Unit"
