"Lack of compassion"

About: Poole Hospital / Accident and emergency Poole Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

A very close relative of mine was admitted to Majors in A&E after being bought in by ambulance. Whilst there it was obvious that it was extremely busy. Yes we waited 6 hours to see a Dr but that is expected when so busy. However we witnessed a security guard and a HCA calling a patient stupid for pulling her catheter out. This patient had mental health issues and alcoholism. This distressed the patient even more!

My relative was finally admitted to the ward. Again obviously extremely busy and under staffed. The care my relative has been given is amazing. However, the poor staff are under so much pressure. A fellow inpatient was left on a commode for over an hour, due to needing two members of staff to move her. Finally a Nurse came along, single handed moved the woman. The nurse was extremely abrupt with the patient, and shouted at the patient at the top of their voice to stand up . The patients and visitors in the room were all visibly shocked by this. As was the patient, who cried as a result, no compassion was given.  This patient was very elderly and weak and we felt this treatment was uncalled for.

I understand that all staff are under pressure, however some staffs patience are fraying at the detriment of the patients. The government need to look at shift lengths and job satisfaction, something needs to give and it shouldn't be care, which sadly it is.

The UHD values are in place and in theory is amazing,  however these do appear to be being adhered to, which is sad to witness for all.
