"Hospital parking"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Medical Oncology

(as a relative),

Anyone who has to visit Gartnavel or the Beatson by car, whether patient or visitor, will find the parking situation horrendous.

I had to take my wife to oncology and despite driving round for 30 minutes in the car parks, I eventually had to drop my wife at the front door and let her find her own way to the department.

I have a blue badge, and decided to have a look at the cars parked in the disabled bays to see how many were displaying one.  Very few, yet there were two parking attendants with high-vis jackets, at the small booth beside the main door, who were chatting in the booth rather than helping motorists find a space or checking disabled spaces were not being used by non-blue badge drivers.

Why can't the hospital have more control over the parking situation, and like some shopping centres, have a monitored blue badge system with fines for not displaying a badge?

Dear BusbyDave

Thank you for sharing your feedback and I was really sorry to hear of the difficulty you experienced trying to find a parking space at the hospital. I appreciate that this must have been a frustrating and upsetting situation, especially when dropping your wife off at the Beatson.

It is disappointing to hear that disabled spaces were being used by non-blue badge holders. We have re-introduced managed parking controls at the Gartnaval campus. During peak times we operate a fair usage policy of a maximum stay of four hours for patient and visitor spaces, this is to mitigate against the misuse of spaces. If parking has exceeded four hours, a car has been parked out with a dedicated space, or in an unsafe manner, or has parked in a disabled parking spacing without displaying a blue badge, an unauthorised penalty notice (UPN) may be issued.

I have passed this to our Travel Planning team and asked them to discuss the misuse of disabled spaces with the Car Parking Attendants.

Thank you

Nicole

I'm sure your ideas of parking management are well intended although due to the large number of cars parked, I doubt that any check on cars being parked for more than 4 hours is very feasible. It really requires more management of the carpark by the attendants to ensure that there is a waiting system for a space rather than a free-for-all.

Some sort of system is required to prevent having to constantly go round and round the carpark, only to find someone in front of you who has just driven in from the entrance, is lucky enough to see a freed up space.

Being a hospital, I would have expected a regulated larger area for disabled blue badge holders.
