My 8 year old daughter recently attended A&E at IRH with ongoing chest pain, which we have been concerned about for some time now, however on this day it became increasingly worse.
We were welcomed at the main reception by one of the clerkess', who was really nice to us, checked my daughter in quickly and efficiently.
The department wasn't too busy, so we weren't waiting for too long to be seen.
We were called in by one of the staff nurses called Avril, she spoke to my daughter directly then spoke with myself. I really liked this, as it made my daughter feel that she was being listened to, rather than let Mum do all the talking as usual. Avril carried out an ECG and took all my daughter's vital signs. She explained at each step exactly what she was doing and why this had to be done. She also gained my daughter's consent before carrying out any of these tasks. My daughter felt so at ease and was reassured the whole time.
We then met with one of the Doctors ( we didn't catch her name) who again explained everything to my daughter, had a listen to her heart and had a quick chat about what could be the problem. My daughter was very anxious about the situation and she has been feeling like us adults aren't listening to her. So it was very reassuring that these lovely health professionals did listen to her.
Thank you again to the staff we encountered during this time. My daughter is feeling so much better
