"A comprehensive, professional and rigorous DEXA scan consultation"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Radiology (X-ray)

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in 2017 and getting that diagnosis from my GP was a bit of a battle and really affected my confidence and mental health.  Since then I've had 3 DEXA scans in different locations in Surrey & Hampshire. Two days ago I attended my appointment at Barnstaple Hospital having moved to Cornwall this year and registered with a new GP. It took two requests by me of two different GPS at the practice to get an appointment for the DEXA requested, so I've waited a few months.

I received a phone call last week & luckily answered the call from an unknown number. I was very happy to be offered an appointment for the following week and attended on a Monday. Parking was easy, locating the x-ray department was reasonably straightforward during to welcoming staff at the main desk.

My feedback is prompted because I've never had such a comprehensive, professional and rigorous DEXA scan consultation. In fact, this is the first consultation where the Radiographer (Karl) has structured the appointment in such a way as to ensure an informative, educational outcome and positive outcome. I can't stress just how comfortable I felt and how grateful I subsequently felt; thank you!

Karl answered my questions, clear explanation in step in the process/worklow. This is the first DEXA scan where both my hips have been scanned and where I anticipate a subsequent report that will make sense and give me the confidence to understand the impact of my current treatment to-date and whether it should continue. Osteoporosis is so little understood and patients once diagnosed are pretty much left to their own devices in managing the condition affecting change. It is vital to engage with health care professionals who are passionate, subject matter experts who can impart information that allows one to be self aware and self managing. I was glad to hear recommendation to contact the  Osteoporosis Organisation for support.

Thank you!

I am a Diagnostic Radiographer with many years experience of working, and imaging patients, in all areas of the Radiology department. I am also responsible for the governance in Radiology and so make sure that we are compliant with the many ionising radiation regulations that dictate what we can and can't do in radiology, keep the patients and staff safe and ensure we are practicing safely. I also deal with our policies and procedures and oversee compliments, complaints and quality.

Dear Osteoporosis survivor,

Thank you for taking the time to leave positive feedback following your DXA scan. I'm so sorry to hear that your diagnosis affected you in that way but glad that you have now moved to this beautiful part of the country and had such a positive experience of our service.

Karl and his team have worked really hard on the DXA service they provide, to make it as easy, comfortable and as good as it can be for their patients and so he will be very pleased to receive your kind feedback, that I will pass onto him today.

I hope that you receive your results soon and have some continued support going forward both from your GP and the Osteoporosis Society.

Kind regards

Gill
