"Car parking situation"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France

(as a service user),

To whom this may concern.

I would like to make you aware about the parking attendants within the ERI.  I was attending the Out of Hours service

I came to park  in the car park 2B which I believed to be the patient car park.

After parking in 2B, and walking towards the hospital. I was approached by a member of parking staff who was very abrupt. I was told I was staff and that I could not park in 2B.

I admitted I was staff but had an appointment. The attendant said that I could not park there and need to move my car.

I said I thought I could park here which I was swiftly told no, I could park for an hour but would need to come back to move it.

I was unsure how long my appointment would be and explained that.

I was then asked to provide a letter for my appointment which I did not have. I felt I was made out to be a liar and it was suggested this would be escalated to management which could result in a permit being taken off me.

I then conceded and moved my car making me late to my appointment as I did not want the hassle and it was embarrassing enough being questioned in the car park with people watching.

As an NHS employee I strive to stand by and up hold the NHS values at all times - especially when interacting with patients and staff.

I’m saddened that this was not reciprocated.

Although this left me upset and distressed. I’m not looking for an apology. I understand that the parking attendants have a busy stressful job, like the rest of the NHS staff. There are signs around the car park asking that the staff be respected. Surely this should be both ways. I just hope this situation does not happen again to anyone

Dear 'Patient0108',

Thank you for sharing this experience with us and I am sorry for the distress this caused.

I will make sure that your feedback is shared with the relevant teams and hopefully we can avoid anyone else finding themselves in a similar situation in the future.

Kind regards,

Aris
