"Why is it now taking so long to send results?"

About: Breast Surgery / Macmillan Breast Care NHS Tayside / East Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as a service user),

Why is it now taking so long to send results? I waited almost 9 weeks for my letter telling me to come for further tests (another week).

A friend still hasn't had her results after over 10 weeks.  We are told that breast cancer is curable if caught early so we attend mammograms only to wait almost 3 months for results.

I had excellent service when I attended for my mammogram and the same can be said about the breast screening at Ninewells for my further tests. The wait for results is far too long.  Is this acceptable?

Dear woodpigeonst34,

We in the breast screening service are very sorry for the delay in issuing results from mammograms just now. It is unsatisfactory that results are being issued 8-10 weeks after appointments. The delay is caused by shortages of specialist staff who are qualified to read mammograms. All our mammograms are read twice to ensure maximum accuracy, and so with a depleted workforce the delays to issuing of results can be lengthy. We are doing our best to try and train and recruit suitable staff, however the problem is UK-wide and so difficult to solve. I'm sorry to say that unfortunately we have no quick fixes to this - the solutions such as training staff will take time to have an effect on the reporting times.

Kind regards,
