"Helped me regain my independence"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Occupational Therapy Lanarkshire Community Services / Physiotherapy

(as a service user),

I became extremely immobile over the course of a year due to a rare genetic Metabolic Myopathy, to the point I was completely dependent on my wheelchair indoors. I was eventually hospitalised for over 7 weeks and was housebound for 6 months.

With the help of medication and a program of physiotherapy delivered by Chris, I am now able to walk (albeit with either my crutches or rollator) about 100m. More significantly for my daily life, I can safely move around my house, use my stairlifts (I live alone in a townhouse so two flights of stairs) and have the strength to make food for myself.

I am delighted with this progress and is more than I ever thought possible. Chris's help, support and advice have been crucial to my recovery to this level. The pace of his physiotherapy has been perfect; he has known exactly when to push me and when to ease off me to ensure my muscles aren't any sorer than they are. Chris is also very personable, which helps as the rapport we have developed makes doing the harder tasks more palatable.

Similarly my OT, Gillian, also from the Coatbridge Health Centre, has been extremely supportive and in providing me with aids has helped me regain my independence. The best being able to use my shower again after 7 months! So not only can I walk a wee bit but I smell and feel cleaner too! Thank you, Gillian!!

My experience has been one of being in a very dark place to making a remarkable comeback. The caliber of their NHS service - i.e. I have not to pay for this service other than through my working taxes - has completely exceeded my expectations. All appointments have been kept, telephone calls to confirm any slight changes etc. very friendly, caring, helpful, knowledgeable people who are great at what they do. A huge thank you to them both.

Hi Gill726,

Thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback regarding your experience with the Coatbridge Integrated Rehabilitation Team. Chris, Gillian and their colleagues will be delighted to hear this and I have passed this feedback on to the team and wider colleagues this morning.

I am sorry to hear you have had such a difficult time lately. It is truly wonderful to hear how your own hard work and dedication, along with guidance from the team, has led to improvements. I am so glad that you are seeing real benefits in terms of your independence.

Please accept my best wishes and thank you again for getting in touch.

Kind regards,

Cara
