"With the support of medical staff I found a strength within me."

About: Ninewells Hospital / Xrays and scans Scottish Ambulance Service / Patient Transport Service Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Medicine of the Elderly Victoria Hospital / Radiology Victoria Hospital / Respiratory Medicine Western General Hospital / Radiotherapy

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I had gone to see my GP and was referred immediately  to Admissions Unit 1 in the Victoria Hospital then I was transferred to Ward 32 (Medicine of the Elderly)

I have been in hospital many times so I am familiar with Hospital routines.

On my last admission to the Victoria Hospital I saw Dr Finch in Respiratory Medicine He was just brilliant. I am most grateful for his care and early diagnosis of Lung Cancer. He really is just brilliant.

A PET was arranged for me and I had to be taken to Ninewells hospital in Dundee. Everything was explained to me again I was so grateful for this.

I was generally feeling a bit low after my diagnosis which is only to be expected however all staff I came into contact with really did their best to make me feel at ease. With this support I then found found a strength within me to help me carry on with the journey.

I then required Radiotherapy at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and for this treatment I was was most fortunate to be able to be offered patient transport Monday -Friday for a 4 week period.

The patient transport team were incredible Always happy They came to my front door then walked me right up into the patient transport Vehicle ensuring I was safe and settled in my seat. This was lovely and I got to know the other patients who were travelling daily too.

The patient transport team had great communication skills making us all laugh on the journey and continually diverting our thoughts.

This was really good as I was anxious at the beginning  to have Radiotherapy.

At the Western General Hospital the staff went into detail about what would happen, what the process would be and how long it would take. I remember being very anxious for the first few days then I settled and everything was okay after this.

On the return journey following treatment the patient transport team continued to make all patients in the vehicle relaxed they were just amazing.

In AU1 and ward 32 the staff have been so caring I have had a lot of procedures including a CT Scan an MRI Scan and an ultrasound I was well prepared for al of those procedures The staff were all very nice I felt at ease.

The radiology team had checklists to go through with me they were great and turned it all around to make it seem more like fun and we had a laugh getting through the questions.

In ward 32 I am in a side room and this makes me feel safe and secure. All the nurses have provided good care I have found no faults.

I would like to thank everyone for the care I have received in every area I have been in .

As a radiographer it is great to hear that the staff who looked after you during your various scans put you at ease, and the experiences were pleasant. I will be sure to pass on your feedback to the rest of the radiology team, and hope the rest of your treatment goes smoothly.
