"Unimpressed with the care provided"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cancer Services (Medical Oncology)

(as a relative),

My husband was admitted to Aberdeen ARI oncology ward 114. He was told to go in the day before his procedure so I took him in but after a 2 hour wait there were still no beds so sent home to come back the next morning. There was a bed waiting for him and he was told he'd go for his procedure at 2.

I called at 3 pm to see if he was back on the ward and I was told he wasn't back up yet. I got a message from him not long after to say he still hadn't been taken. No one updated him on what was happening, it wasn't until I had to call macmillian navigator service that they got his specialist nurse to call that I knew what was going on and by this time he was taken for his procedure.

I called before heading to see him to make sure he was back but I feel I was ignored, called again and the phone was answered, no one spoke but transferred me straight to the nurse looking after him.  The night shift nurse looking after him was great, unfortunately I didn't get their name, we got more info from them within 10 mins than the day staff.

We are very unimpressed with the care he received after having such a positive outcome last time he was in. I feel I was lied to about his not being back when he hadn't left and we were left with no info. He has to wait for a different procedure which they couldn't book a date or time for him so we have been left in the dark on what his cancer is doing.

We have lost trust in his care and feel very let down. I understand the NHS is under a lot of pressure, but I would expect a lot better care, especially for someone who has not long found out their tumour is growing and causing health issues.

Dear TLeigh

I am sincerely disappointed to read that your husband has had a negative experience whilst a patient in ward 114.

I would really appreciate if you could contact either myself on yvonne.wright2@nhs.scot or Caty Smith, Nurse Manager on catriona.smith2@nhs.scot (or alternatively 0345 456 6000 and ask for either of us on the switchboard) to discuss your concerns further.

We always strive to provide the best service possible therefore your feedback is extremely valuable to us to enable us to improve or change the service if required

Thanks and very much look forward to hearing from you

Kindest regards

Dear TLeigh

Thank you very much for taking the time to share details of your husbands admission to ward 114 and sorry this was such a negative experience on this occasion. I would like to discuss details of your husbands' admission further with you both if you or your husband wish to do so, aiming to answer some of the points you have raised. As care opinion is anonymised, at this point I will not be able to access any detail. I look forward hearing from you in the near future. My contact number is 01224 559425.

Best wishes to you both.
