I am concerned about the meals replacement provision in Ayrshire and Arran.
The contract company for AA NHS does not provide any supplements without dairy. Why is there no option for this?
Whilst in Crosshouse hospital I asked if non-dairy and non-wheat meal supplements were available. It's not unusual for someone to have a non-dairy or non-wheat diet, and having no option for this does not seem ok. In endoscopy, for example, they don't routinely have gluten free sandwiches available or ask in advance about any specific dietary requirements. AA do not automatically provide dairy free /wheat free as an option - it is a special request from a clinician and it makes an already difficult situation worse
The meal replacement covers the whole of Ayrshire and Arran NHS dietetics service. To ask for specific dietary requirements a dietician has to ask and provide justification. The dietician I've been speaking to has been great but has to first get agreement. They then do a special order which takes additional time to arrive. I then have to go and collect it from the health centre as the dietician based at the company will only send it to them. Why can't it be sent to the local surgery?
The only thing they have been able to order is a powder. I have agreed to try this but other powders have not been ok for me as I can feel the texture vs an already made up drink.
I do not think I should have to "justify " asking for wheat/gluten and dairy free supplements.
