My grandad was taken to A&E after a fall in the garden which resulted in a minor head injury and a couple of broken ribs. He was in A&E from 8:00pm until the following morning at 11:30 am on a trolley.
He was admitted for overnight observation in AMU. When my dad went to visit him in the morning he had another large bump on his head and was now on oxygen she required a CT. Staff were not sure what had happened and he was found lying at the side of his bed.
We asked if there was a falls monitor on him overnight but there was not.
On Friday afternoon He was then moved to ward 202.
On Saturday he was moved to ward 102 without anyone notifying the family. Again he fell out the bed and he hurt his right arm.
He was then moved to major trauma
Then moved to 201 - Most of the staff in 201 were very nice and helpful however this was is majorly understaffed and at times not safe. At the start of May my grandad was taken to the toilet by a member of staff who then went on their break and my grandad was found by the ward housekeeper who heard banging on the door. This was a traumatic experience for him. At the end of May he was found to have slipped out the chair and was found on the floor next to his bed. Later on in May he fell out the bed overnight and split his head open requiring staples. This was a really awful experience for my grandad. All the moving to different wards, all the different staff..All the falls he has whilst in the care of the NHS.
The staff on ward 201 were all trying their best with what staff they had and their patient workload. The domestics and housekeepers are always doing their best to keep everyone smiling and we were always kept up to date.
For what was meant to be a 24 hour observation it is now very disappointing how many times my grandad fell within the care of the royal infirmary. He is still not home and probably won’t make it home now as he now has cognitive problems which will mean he will need 24 hour care within a care home.
He is now in Liberton Hospital who had been amazing with him and have managed to keep him safe.
