"I remained amazed at how well those around me were treated"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency Antrim Area Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Antrim Area Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as a service user),

Having suffered from a sore throat for a number of days, a consultation with my GP suggested my symptoms required further investigation. I visited A&E at Antrim that afternoon. Following a relatively short wait I was referred to Minor Injuries for further investigation. I was examined promptly by the Doctor who further referred me to an ENT specialist due to abnormal swelling in my mouth and throat. I remained relatively unconcerned as although in considerable pain felt a short course of medication would rectify the issue. The consultant was concerned however that the swelling in my throat was restricting my airway and further intervention was necessary.

I was taken to the resuscitation ward for further assessment by now somewhat concerned I could not have been put more at ease by the attentiveness of all the medical staff I encountered. Since a risk existed that continued deterioration would hamper my breathing admission to ICU was recommended. I was promptly taken there for what appeared as a precaution. My admission was seamless but I did feel somewhat humbled observing those patients in much worse circumstances than myself.

Staff in the unit were however outstanding through out and their dedication to those patients and myself was incredible to see. Everything that I was likely to face in terms of my treatment was explained in great detail putting me and my family immediately at ease. Staff were attentive, friendly and incredibly professional throughout and whilst my needs were clearly not as acute as my fellow patients it was enlightening to see how well everyone worked as a cohesive and efficient unit a true testament to the superb work of the NHS we have come to expect.

My own treatment was relatively straightforward but I remained amazed at how well those around me were treated. The NHS is at times maligned in the press in respect of waiting times, admissions and bed space and I believe this is truly unjust when compared to the levels of care administered by all the front line staff from domestic staff, nursing staff, Doctors and Consultants. Whilst my stay was thankfully short I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration to all those who have dedicated their lives to the medical/ pastoral care of others and an ever in your debt.
