"My bariatric bypass journey ."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently had a gastric bypass at Treliske hospital and I would like to say thanks to the whole team who guided me on my weight-loss pathway.  It was needed due to having severe arthritis in both knees, spinal stenosis (played rugby for years ) and finally ending up with cauda equina .

The bariatric team , Leanne my dietician,Tim (now left ) who was my psychologist, Toby and Jeremy my bariatric nurses, the nurses on admissions , the nurse who wheeled me to theatre and sat and kept me calm whilst waiting . Mr Clark who did my surgery, the recovery team ...apparently I  gave them a run for there money! The EPOC ward with Claire who was the staff nurse ,the night team .and Mr Finley who heads them and not forgetting Gail who did all the appointments, mail, phone calls, and got us answers.

I have to say they were fantastic and at no point in that chain did I ever feel confused , ignored , uncared for.  I felt important.  I didn't feel like a failure in any way as I was overweight, like a few other doctors can make you feel.  I was understood.

And it didn't end at the surgery, the after care is great.  They have an amazing support network.  Anyone who is having surgery in Treliske you are in good hands.  This was my 4th surgery there , previous 2 gynaecology and gallbladder removal ,and the staff are amazing ,lovely caring people.

Well done Treliske .

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am so pleased that the operation went well and that you were impressed with the whole team who guided your weight-loss pathway and recovery.

I am responding to you as the Patient Experience lead for EPOC, but I will ensure your story is shared with the teams who cared for you while you were with us.

Thank you again for taking the time to share such an honest account of your experience and your continued reassurance to your friends and family that the NHS is here for anyone who needs it.

Sarah Brack - Senior Staff Nurse, EPOC, RCHT
