"Renal failure"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Palliative Care Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Renal Dialysis Strathcarron Hospice

(as the patient),

Stopped dialysis as I found it too hard . Started at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and got great care, went to hospice then Falkirk hospital.  This is day 55 without dialysis and only 1 kidney and an EGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) of 7 . I'm now  being sent home to die.

So just shows how much NHS is struggling

Dear Earmarkqq85

I am the Clinical Service Manager for the Renal Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. I am pleased to hear that you received great care but I am sorry to hear that you have stopped dialysis as you find it too hard. I am unsure if you are still in hospital. If you are still in hospital, I would urge you to speak to the staff to discuss your concerns or if you are at home to contact your GP.

Take Care

Eleanor

Dear earmarkgg85,

I am so sorry to hear that you are unable to continue your dialysis. Without knowing more of your story it is challenging to know what is required to support you at this difficult time. I would agree with the previous response from Eleanor and urge you to discuss your concerns with ward staff if you are still an inpatient. If you are now discharged home please contact your GP or district nurses. Alternatively, if you would like to speak to one of our acute palliative care nurses please contact them on 01324 566325, where they can discuss your circumstances and help to arrange appropriate support if this is not already in place.

Take care

Update posted by earmarkgg85 (the patient)

Thank you for your reply and concern. I am now back alone in a flat; being alone is the hardest, but my palliative care doctor gave me 2 days to a few weeks to live back in May. My hallucinations are the most terrifying and life-like I've ever had.

Some hospitals show great care and help you through day but some give you meds up to 4 hrs late.

Thanks

Dear Earmarkqq85,

So sorry you are having such a hard time. I am not clear from your story if you have palliative care support in place at home, but if you are having ongoing hallucinations or symptom issues please get in touch with your local team if you have their details, or your own GP to see if there is anything that can be done to improve the situation and help support your further.

Susan has given a useful phone number above.

I hope we manage to get things better for you going forward.

Alistair

Dear Earmarkqq85,

I'm sorry to hear you are having difficult and distressing symptoms at home. If you are having ongoing issues, please contact your GP, who may be able to help, and can refer you to Strathcarron Hospice community team if needed, so that they can help. If you are already known to the hospice, you could also contact them for support.

I hope that you can access the help which you need.

Best wishes,

Sarah
