"ADHD referral via my nurse"

About: Community Mental Health / Community Mental Health Team (Adult)

(as a service user),

I’ve was being supported with a community psychiatric nurse via my gp surgery.

I spoke to the nurse about ADHD and she assessed me and booked me a face to face appointment and made a referral for a diagnosis and today I received a letter saying it’s been rejected.

This was such a disappointment as the nurse had already identified traits in my behaviour and we discussed my childhood etc and she was confident her referral was strong and would be accepted but today I got the blow that it was rejected.

I feel so lost not knowing how to move on, this was required so I could learn and cope better but back again to square one.

I'm feeling that Ayrshire & Arran mental health services are so disappointing and really failing me. I work hard and contribute and when I need support and help to work out what’s going on I just got dealt the blow I wasnt expecting I don’t know how to challenge this.

Update posted by Pat394 (a service user)

After Speaking to Karen, I handed in the required notes from early school, secondary school college and into my adult life about the difficulty I have experienced. I put a lot of time and effort into this, I left this in the Medical Practice for the MHP to refer me for the ADHD Assessment.

I have not been given any further information. I don’t know where my referral is at and what the waiting time is. This is very frustrating. I’ve been supported by Nest Ayrshire and Procrastination Station CIC but feel totally let down by the adult community mental health service. The lack of communication and sitting in limbo is causing distress.

This is affecting my work life and my work have referred me to OH for an assessment to check my fitness to remain in post. This whole situation is really affecting my life and potential of losing my job due to the struggles.

You feel like a nuisance phoning asking for updates and when they take your number and say they will check and get back to you no one does.

Thank you for your response. Karen has contacted me to discuss and has explained the process and where we are at with the referral.

Karen also made me aware that I am registered and can contact the three towns office and speak to the duty nurse if I experience difficulties.

I found Karen to be very pleasant and understanding, it was very helpful that Karen explained everything in detail and took the time to understand my current situation and offer reassurance.
