"Waiting for scan results"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Radiology

(as a relative),

I previously posted on here that my mum had waited around ten months for a DEXA Scan. I was told several times that the scanner at the RAH was in the process of being replaced and if my mum wanted a scan she would need to go to Inverclyde. After thinking about this for a couple of days my mum agreed.

She was given an appointment for Inverclyde but the evening before her appointment she received a phone call to tell her the appointment was being cancelled as the scanner had broken down but they could offer another appointment for a week later at the RAH in Paisley. My mum was surprised at tis as i had been repeatedly told the scanner was being replaced.

Mum mums appointment was in April and she asked the person doing the scan when she would receive the results as the last time she waited three months. My mum was told she would get the results in four weeks and she said that would be great as she was going on holiday and would know what was going on before she went and also her chiropractor was awaiting the results .

Two weeks after the scan my mum received a phone call informing her that the doctor from the DEXA scan wanted her to have a blood test so she was offered an appointment in just under three weeks at the RAH for the blood test. When my mum attended for the blood test she was told the test could have been done by her GP. My mum could have already had the blood test done and the results could have been back by the time she attended the hospital for the test. She was told to call her GP in a week for the results.

A week later my mum called and no results. We have now returned from holiday and its been nearly nine weeks since the DEXA Scan and four weeks since the blood test and my mum has had no results from either. I think this is ridiculous, wanting people to wait all this time for results. My mum had to go on holiday in pain as she did not have the results of the scan and her GP would not do anything as they needed the results of the scan.

It looks as if it is going to take three months again for the results again and I have no idea how long for the blood results. For now my mum is still in pain and will have to carry on until she eventually gets the results.

Dear S69

I am sorry to hear about your mums experience within the diagnostic services. Diagnostic imaging is currently working to reduce the waiting times of Dexa scans as we do so the reporting requirements will increase. We are currently experiencing some delays to reporting of these scans and are activity working to mitigate this.

If you are still unhappy can you please contact our Complaints Team at: complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk or telephone 0141 201 4500

Thanks

Amy

Thank you for the reply but I've found there is no point contacting the complaints team as it does not get you anywhere.

I understand the department are trying to get the waiting list down but when my mum attended and asked how long the results would take, the person she spoke to told her four weeks and showed a small pile of reports that had to be done before they would get to my mums.

I understand it might not have been exactly four weeks for the results but nearly nine weeks is a bit long considering there apparently wasn’t that many to be done before my mums. A month for a blood test is ridiculous when your GP can get the results in less than a week
