"X-ray staff"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department The Ulster Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I was at the Ulster hospital on at the end of June

I was treated by triage with no issues and seen by the loveliest wee young Dr who then sent me for an X-ray on my shoulder to have a look at the joint.

When in X-ray a staff member approached me after I had been waiting a good 20 minutes or so.  They asked where I was sore etc. then started to examine my shoulder by pressing into the joint and making the pain worse.  They then stated that I actually shouldn’t be at X-ray again as this with the 3rd time this year  They weren't happy and went to speak with the dr that sent me around.

The x-ray staff member said that if the x-ray isn't painful then it isn't being done right, and suggested that they like putting people in pain

The next x-ray was taken with me sitting down with my arm and shoulder stretched well out  and pushed down more on the table, leaving me in serve pain.

On the way out they also suggested that the weakness in my arm is my fault due to not doing the exercises given me 3 years ago and that I should go to the gym.  I’m not a big person nor can I use the gym anymore.

I went back round to where the dr told me to wait.  I was in tears and screaming in pain. It was that bad that another member of staff asked if I was ok and I just said no.  An  hour later the dr came and found me and explained what the problem could actually be.

I do not think a patient should ever be treated like this .

X-ray staff should only take X-rays  - I don't feel they should  give you a diagnosis or advise you to never come back to X-ray or the hospital again

I am sorry to read of your shoulder difficulty and of the care elements that you describe that could have been better.

I have raised your points made to service leadership for consideration and response to be made to you.

If you wish to have a personal-level response made to you rather than a service-level response, please contact me by email at conor.campbell@setrust.hscni.net to provide your name / date of birth / address / contact information.
