My dad is a patient in ward 4A in Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He recently had a hip replacement and was doing amazing - he is in his eighties and- everyone was astonished at his recovery. He had a fall and broke his femur and it was discovered that he damaged his hip replacement.
He lay in the royal for almost a week before surgery. When he got his surgery we were not informed what it entailed. During my visits with my father it was evident the lack of efficiency and competence of some of the staff.
Alarms on his infusion continually went off and no response from staff. Cotton wool balls to cover his bleeding was dropped on the floor and picked up again and placed on his wound. Intravenous cannulas were not inserted correctly and were leaking were applied. I found myself continually asking for nurses help when I visited and I hate to think of what happened if I was not there.
My dad is in his eighties but he he has the mind of a 20 year old and before being admitted he was the fittest man alive. I feel his lack of care is due to the incompetence of the staff on ward 4A at the Royal and I am extremely worried about his recovery in that hospital
